A properly installed and well maintained Laser Link, Microwave Link or Wireless Link could give you in some cases 50,
100 or 500 times the bandwidth of a leased line connection for the same price
and the same availability - but without the recurring annual rental fees - you
would own the link.
Your BT leased line traffic may in fact actually pass
through several of BT's own Microwave Links on its way to
your site. Microwave Links especially show very high availability.
Please also note that many carriers do not count their own scheduled maintenance
or the application of emergency patches as downtime against your service level
agreements (SLA)
It is also important regardless of your eventual choice of
technological solution to understand what the difference is between 99.999% and
99.9% availability
As a Network or IT manager you need to ask yourself,
are the costs involved on a leased line connection
proportional to the real world downtime of your systems? If we
analyse the metrics on the right we can show that this is not the case for most
organizations.
If your systems are based on a Windows OS such as Windows NT, 2000, 2003, XP
then lets face it, your systems are not going to have a 99.999% uptime. All it
takes is 1 reboot per year from any
of your domain or file servers to install a patch or service pack and that
figure is gone.
If you suffered say a RAID card failure on your domain server
taking an hour to rectify and then rebuild your array, then that’s your 99.99%
uptime gone for the year. A full system rebuild when an unverified security
patch killed
half your applications? That's your Saturday and your 99.9% uptime gone. If 99.999%
uptime was genuinely important to any of our organisations infrastructure then we would
all still be using green screen dumb terminals.
Unless you cluster your servers (more expense) and apply double system
redundancy at every level then such high levels of uptime
per year are not a realistic expectation of your Corporate or SME domain. Many
high end enterprise UNIX based servers can, and do deliver such availability
which is why they are used in true mission critical activities such as banking
and trading, and not forgetting the true mission critical activities of the
emergency services .
Unless you are a bank, stock exchange trading floor or
provide an emergency service, for those last few percent, the cost is not in
proportion to the cost of downtime to your business and/or activities.
Have you checked yet whether a high speed laser link, wireless link or microwave
link is viable between
your premises?

The cost is not in proportion to the cost of downtime to
your business..
The most compelling argument for purchasing a Wireless
Link, Laser Link or
Microwave link is that...
you will own the link
with
no high annual rental costs.
Let External Networks save your
company thousands of £'s per year - every year with a Laser or Radio Link.
