Microwave Link
If your
business needs site-to-site connectivity over a longer range
than is available with either a Laser
Link or Wireless Link, then your best
option is a licensed frequency point to point Microwave Link.

If no high obstacles (hills, towers etc) exist obstructing the path
through the air between the roofs of your sites, and the distance is less than
50km then you will have good chance
of running a Microwave Link between these sites.
If your sites are not Line of Sight (LOS) - not to worry
since a Wireless Radio Near Line of Sight (NLOS) solutions may
operate. These work by sending out multiple signals in different
directions 'bouncing' the signal off of other buildings.
Many carriers such as BT and
mobile operators deploy large numbers of these, have a
look for them when you next pass your local telephone exchange.
In fact, if you order a high bandwidth Leased Line solution via
BT that traverses several BT exchanges, your data may in fact be
transmitted over a BT owned Microwave Link. They buy and install
the equipment and then rent it out to you - at a premium of
course.
Many people ask about the physical size of the antenna required,
worried about the size of the unit on or near the building -
this again depends but as an example a 2ft diameter antenna
could transmit and receive 311Mbps dedicated throughput at a
distance of 20Km / 14 Miles. No more obtrusive than your average
Satellite TV dish. In a lot of cases a 30 cm (1 foot) antenna
diameter may be sufficient.
A Microwave Link can be more expensive than a
Laser Link or
Wireless Link
but you can still see a markedly greater cost benefit owning a
Microwave Link against renting a Leased Line.
Microwave Links can conduct a whole variety of throughputs
scaling past 155 Mbps and beyond, and operate on a variety of
different frequencies.
It is not important to go into the technical aspects of this
right now, within
the scope of this page. It is sufficient to state that the following physical
conditions need to be satisfied:
-
A
direct line-of-sight path, that is, the microwave antennas
can be placed such that there are no obstructions
-
The
distance between the two sites is less than 50 km.
Microwave transmissions are licensed bands and you will need to
pay an annual licence fee to
OfCom.
We will manage this process for you.
The cost of this license is derived from a formula that is
dependent on a number of factors such as your location, the
distance of the link, the frequency used and the throughput
of the traffic.
Due to the initial equipment,
installation, and licensing costs, microwave links tend to be
permanent installations.
After that the link will be free
of charge with the exception of the yearly licence fee
payable to OfCom.

Let External Networks save your
company thousands of £'s per year - every year with a Microwave Link.
In addition to no annual rental, some
of the benefits our customers gain from owning their own high speed link are:
Data - Connect IP networks
together allowing company wide access to services,
sharing of internet access between sites, remote management of servers
and workstations located at branch sites, real time off site backups.
Voice – Make free internal telephone calls between your sites. Extensions
to your PBX or a full IP Telephony solution may be required.
Video - Employ IP camera technology to enable video conferencing for
employees between sites, or to remotely monitor branch sites for security
purposes (CCTV).
The most compelling argument for purchasing a
Microwave Link is that..
You will own the link
with
no high annual rental costs.
