Symmetric
digital subscriber line (SDSL) is a technology similar to ADSL
(asymmetric digital subscriber line) - the difference being you have a fast
upload and download speed to the internet, not just a fast download speed as you
have with ADSL broadband.
You will require an SDSL modem but this will normally
be provided by your SDSL supplier.
If you want to
implement a site to site solution for your business then you will need a fast
upload and download speed operational on at least one end of the link,
preferably both.
Remember if
someone is downloading a file from your server, their fastest download speed is
the same as your fastest upload speed.
For the sake of argument you uploading a
file to them is the same as them downloading a file from you.
With ADSL for a
2Mbps connection your theoretical upload speed is 256Kbps, with SDSL at each end
both sites experience an upload and download speed of 2Mbps.
This puts SDSL as a
site to site solution at a clear advantage to ADSL.
In practice
this would be implemented using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) gateway also at
each of your sites so as to secure the flow of data between the 2 sites. This
encrypts the traffic as it flows over the internet, but will also reduce your
speed between sites due to the encrypting and decrypting of the data.
An SDSL VPN
building to building solution can give a good price / performance ratio compared
with a Leased Line solution but you are limited to a theoretical maximum
bandwidth of 2Mbps. Remember that this bandwidth will usually be shared with
other business users at a contention ratio of 1:10.
Now lets look
at actual costs using BT’s own prices as of 21st March 2006.
Product: BT
Business Broadband Advanced 2000 (2Mbps)
Connection Charge: £595 Quarterly
Rental: £1035
So the link
cost in the first year comes to ((1035 x 4) + 595) x 2 = £9420
And every subsequent year after that the cost will be 1035 x 4 x 2 = £8280
So over 3 Years
the link will cost £25,980 for a 2Mbps link.
And over 5 years the link will cost you £42,540 for a 2Mbps link.
This does not include the cost of your VPN solution.
So how does this compare with paying a one off payment of:
£6,655 for a 14Mbps link or
£11,868 for a 100Mbps link or even
£21,184 for a 1000Mbps link ?
Have you checked yet whether a high speed
Laser Link, Wireless Link or
Microwave
Link is viable between
your premises?

Let External Networks save your
company thousands of £'s per year - every year with a Laser or Radio Link.
In addition to no annual rental, some
of the benefits our customers gain from owning their own high speed link are:
Data - Connect IP networks
together allowing company wide access to services, remote management of servers
and workstations located at branch sites, real time off site backups.
Voice – Make free internal telephone calls between your sites. Extensions
to your PBX or a full IP Telephony solution may be required.
Video - Employ IP camera technology to enable video conferencing for
employees between sites, or to remotely monitor branch sites for security
purposes (CCTV).
The most compelling argument for purchasing a Wireless Radio, FSO Laser or
Microwave link is that...
you will own the link with
no high annual rental costs.
